Childproof Your Home - Smoke and Fire Springfield Missouri

Childproof Your Home – Smoke and Fire Springfield Missouri

Every year, several thousand children across America are rushed to the hospital for burn and fire-related injuries. Many incidents are preventable as long as parents exercise caution and childproof their homes. Follow these easy tips to protect your kids from burn and fire injuries in and out of the home.

Inside

  • When using the stove, focus on the back burners, as it prevents small children from reaching up and burning themselves. Also, put toddlers in a high chair or playpen while you’re cooking.
  • Turn pot and pan handles toward the rear of the stove to prevent a curious child from grabbing them and burning themselves.
  • Keep oven mitts, towels, and other flammable items off the top of the stove so a child doesn’t accidentally move them toward a hot burner.
  • Be sure microwaved beverages and foods aren’t too hot before giving them to children. Don’t microwave baby bottles.
  • Don’t let your kids get near lamps, paraffin, gasoline, candles, lighters, hot irons, matches, and other things that start fires. Store these items in locked cabinets and extinguish candles before leaving a room.
  • Store combustible liquids out of children’s reach, away from fire and flame.
  • Keep heaters a minimum of three feet from bedding, drapes, and other flammable materials.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher on every floor and learn how to use it.
  • If the home has a fireplace, install a guard door to prevent kids from burning themselves.
  • Ensure that smoke detectors are installed in each bedroom, change their batteries yearly, and test them monthly.
  • Use tamper-resistant covers to prevent children from inserting objects and fingers into electrical outlets.
  • Choose children’s clothing made of natural fabrics, as they’re less likely to ignite. Don’t let kids wear loose clothing at night, and teach them to stop, drop, and roll if their clothing catches fire.
  • Create and implement an escape plan with the children. Find two ways out of every room, don’t use locking knobs on kids’ bedroom doors, teach them to crawl under smoke, and select a meeting area outside the home.

Outside

  • Always supervise kids around campfires, kerosene lamps, fire pits, grills, and heaters. Don’t let children play around them.
  • Before putting your kids in their car seats, check for hot buckles and straps. Cover the seats when parking in full sunlight.
  • Fireworks are dangerous for adults and children alike. If possible, don’t use them when children are near. If not, supervise them closely. Instead of sparklers, which burn at 1200 degrees, give your kids glow sticks – which are equally fun!
